Accessibility statement
Last updated: 1 October 2026.
I want everyone to be able to read and use this site, whatever device or assistive technology they use. The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA.
What is in place
- Every page has one main heading, named landmarks for the header, navigation, main content and footer, and a “Skip to content” link as the first focusable element.
- The whole site works from a keyboard. The menu, its sub-menus, the search box, the newsletter form and the cookie notice can all be reached and operated with Tab, Enter and Escape, and the focused element always has a visible outline.
- Every form field has a visible label.
- Images carry text alternatives. Purely decorative images are marked so that screen readers skip them.
- Body text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 against its background.
- Text can be resized to 200% without loss of content, and the layout adapts to any screen width without horizontal scrolling.
- Nothing flashes, and interface animation is turned off for visitors who have asked their device to reduce motion.
- No time limits apply anywhere on the site.
Known limitations
This site holds more than ten years of writing, and not all of it has been brought up to the same standard yet:
- Some older posts use heading levels out of sequence, so a screen reader may announce a jump from a level-two to a level-four heading.
- A small number of older posts contain links that read “click here” or “read more” without saying where they go.
- Some older screenshots have only brief text alternatives.
- Some posts include animated GIF screen recordings that loop and cannot be paused, and a device’s reduce-motion setting does not stop them.
- Content embedded from other services is provided by those services and may not meet the same standard: the Google Slides presentation on the Portfolio page, the Google Doc on the Pricing page, YouTube videos, a Giphy animation, an Airtable form and the Mailchimp signup. The YouTube recordings of talks have YouTube’s automatically generated captions only, and no transcripts.
- PDFs linked from some posts have not been checked for accessibility.
How this was assessed
The site was reviewed in September and October 2026 with a combination of automated checks and a manual review of navigation, forms, images and colour contrast across all pages. Every rebuild checks that images carry text alternatives; the other checks are repeated by hand when the site’s layout or features change.
Tell me if something does not work
If you find a page or a feature you cannot use, email rachel@rachelandreago.com with the address of the page and what happened. I read every message and will fix what I can and reply either way. If you need any content in another format, ask and I will send it.
