Tip: Content managers usually handle much more than just blogs. They should be comfortable with all forms of writing, from long-form articles to social media posts.
Organization
Content managers need to orchestrate everything from content creation to distribution and analysis. Organizational skills are vital to keeping your content machine running smoothly. You want someone with a great internal system for managing projects, meeting deadlines, and documenting task details.

How to hire a content marketing manager
Ready to ramp up your content, equip your customer-facing teams, and fuel your growth? It’s time to hire a content marketing manager for your startup.
1) Identify the core competencies you’re looking for
Before you write your job description, get clear on the skills and qualities you are looking for in candidates. Do this by identifying the core competencies that are most important for this role.
Make a list of approximately five core competencies ideal candidates should possess. Examples include:
- Can effectively track and manage their KPIs
- Is able to make brand-strengthening decisions independently
- Has strong time management while working with shareholders across timezones
- Is adaptable and flexible between on-site and remote work
- Can successfully project manage a set content production process involving multiple contributors
- Is able to run regular audience analysis to evaluate best audience for each acquistion channel
These core competencies may be specific to the role of a content marketing manager such as effective storytelling or they may be competencies that integrate with your company culture and strategy such as collaborative teamwork.
2) Create a job description
Create a job description that includes:
- An introduction to your startup and why they should care
- Main role and responsibilities, with scope for the role to develop
- A list of essential and desired skills or capabilities
- Salary range and benefits, including share options
The job description should paint a picture of your expectations for the perfect-fit candidate. At the same time, it should offer them an insight into what it might be like to work at your organization. Remember, job applicants are interviewing your company just as much as you are interviewing them.
When writing the job description, be sure to include a skills section that highlights any essential and desirable skills based on your list of the core competencies required for this role.
3) Share it far and wide
Post your opening on your careers page, publish the opening on LinkedIn, share it on social media, send it to your Slack communities, and add a listing on job boards. You can even share it on relevant subreddits like r/HireaWriter.
Tip: Reach out to your network to see if they have any recommendations. Some of the best writers I’ve worked with came from recommendations. (Some of my most successful, best-fit, long-term clients were recommended as well.)
4) Write valuable interview questions
The questions you ask when interviewing job applicants can help you find the perfect candidate for the role. By asking the right questions, you’ll give interviewees the chance to demonstrate their skills and experiences.
Write interview questions before you start the interview process. These questions should be mapped to each of your core competencies, giving candidates the chance to demonstrate their relevant skills.
Competency-based interview questions you could ask candidates include:
- Can you tell me about a time you led a content project for a complex topic? How did you handle it?
- How would you measure the performance of content marketing? Can you share examples of the metrics you’d measure and why?
- What do you think is the most important thing to include in a content brief?
- Describe an instance where you have supervised a team of content writers. Describe how you keep projects on track and produced to a high standard.
- Can you tell me about a time you received negative feedback on your content. How did you approach the conversation and come to a resolution?
5) Specify what a great answer sounds like
For each of the questions you plan to ask, create an interview score card or scoring matrix to objectively review candidate answers. This structured approach lets you identify the most suitable candidates without bias interfering with your judgement.
When used correctly, this interview score card helps you specify what a great answer sounds like so you can find ideal candidates during your interview process. Use a consistent scale to score candidate answers to questions.
I like using a matrix of 1 to 5 where:
- 1 = The answer missed the point of the question and didn’t provide any usable information
- 2 = The answer was poor and mostly irrelevant but contained some good points
- 3 = The answer addressed key concepts of the question but lacked depth or clarity
- 4 = A strong answer that provide clear, well-thought-out answers with relevant examples and demonstrable strategy
- 5 = An in-depth answer that showed innovative strategy and included measurable goals, detailed steps, and addressed challenges
Sticking to pre-defined questions and a scoring criteria based on what a great answer looks like, you can assess candidates more objectively to find the best person for the role.
6) Run a test or trial
Once you start getting applications and resumes, look at their experience. There are content managers who specialize in working with growing companies, enterprise clients, and startups. You want to hire for the unique soft skills necessary for success in startups, such as the ability to wear multiple hats and move fast.
For example, an enterprise content department likely has strict processes in place, so you want someone who is good at taking direction and following structure. In a startup, you move quickly, and content needs shift all the time, so you want someone who can implement efficient processes that are ready to scale.
Run a paid test or have a two-month trial to see how you work together and if it’s a good fit. Consider asking someone to rewrite a section of an article, or determine the best keyphrase to target for a webpage or article.
You want to keep an eye out for the skills I mentioned above, and look at how clearly they communicate, how quickly they respond, and how well they hit deadlines.
Some tests you could run as part of your second-stage hiring process could include:
- Asking candidates to create a content strategy for a specific company
- Demonstrate SEO copywriting skills by writing an article that targets specific keywords
- Showcase their writing skills by writing an introduction for a blog article
- Demonstrate their ability to simplify complex topics by writing a section of an article on a complex topic
When giving job candidates a test, it’s best practice to pay them for their time. Compensating people for their time and effort shows you care about their input. It could also mean they complete the task to a higher quality knowing they’re being fairly compensated for spending time on it.
